It’s hard to encapsulate how much Afghanistan changed me as a person. Posted there in 2005, aged 28, I was suddenly part of an international coalition to rebuild the country and counter the Taliban.

Afghanistan

Brought face to face with the rubble and ruins of decades of brutal conflict, I saw with my own eyes the scale of military might now brought to bear. What would it accomplish?
Ruined forts, towering and crumbling minarets, a sea of poppies, rivers in the desert, phosphorescent sands and helicopters in the night. It felt like Afghanistan had seen this mystery play a thousand times before.
