How does a place so completely capture the imagination? How can it be so epic in proportions? So much larger than life? Somehow older than time?
Egypt
When I was a little boy at church they taught me how to spell the strange name of this mythical place where angels killed little boys like me, grasshoppers ate everyone’s food and people called Israelites walked across the Red Sea.
Imagine my surprise then when, not so many years later, I found out that Egypt was a real place and I could actually go visit. That the Pharaohs left colossal temples in the sand, constructed multi-coloured pyramids to mate with the stars, and saw the Nile as a celestial mirror of the Milky Way.
I’ve been going ever since and I’m still only touching the surface of its endless depths. Sunken temples, hidden tombs, Islamic empires, and a city of graves where the living dwell amongst the dead.
